short biography.
Mason was born and raised in the small town of Wimberley, Texas. His father worked at one of the local farms, plowing fields and bringing in crops every year. Over the winters when work was scarce on the farms, he would get odd jobs around town or in neighboring cities. Because of his father's constant absence, Mason spent most of his childhood with his Mom who ran a beauty salon out of the backroom of their house. It was nothing fancy, basically a dining room chair set up near a sink with a hose attached to it, some hot curlers bought at the store, and a bunch of fashion magazines nobody ever bothered to look at.

His family didn't have much, but they always managed to get by with what they had. His parents were firm believers that hard work and good manners would get you everything you needed in life. Even when they fell on hard times and had to sell off some of his grandparents belongings, they never cursed or complained. God would provide. That's what his father always said.

Growing up with parents who were that determined, who had such strong morals, it was no wonder that Mason turned out the way he did. He was a hard worker, himself. He'd take on odd jobs around town with some of his friends .. doing yard work, painting houses, looking after pets. The minute he was old enough for his first real job, he started working at Ginger's grocery store, saving every penny he ever made. He studied hard in school, trying his best to keep his grades up, though he was never so good at Science and Math. While he enjoyed sports, he never bothered to join any of the teams but was always at the games to cheer on his fellow Cougars. Of course, that was mainly because his parents couldn't afford the amount of money it cost to be involved in all of those things .. paying for uniforms or bus trips. Mason was very rarely involved in extracurricular activities unless it was something he didn't need to pay for.

For the most part, Mason got along with everybody. Sure, there were some people who didn't like him because he wouldn't stoop to their level. While he could take care of himself and would fight if provoked, he wasn't one of those guys who went looking for trouble. He wasn't the type to do drugs or have sex with random people. The only time he drank was at parties, and even then he was always so cautious. It was a wonder he ever really lived at all. And who knows, maybe he really hadn't until she moved to town.

Sophomore year of high school, Natalia Ramirez moved into the house next door to his. The minute that Mason saw her, he was hooked. She had the prettiest brown eyes and this slightly olive skin that was less farm girl tan and slightly more exotic. There was something different about her than all the other girls at school. She seemed more worldly, at least in the mind of a the small town boy that he was. She seemed more mature, more intelligent. He found himself wanting to be around her as often as possible. After school each day, he'd offer to walk home with her. And when he saved up enough money to buy his first junker car, he offered to give her rides home. The two became nearly inseparable.

At the beginning, people thought that they were just friends. Hell, even Mason was starting to think that's all they'd amount to be. But by their Junior year, Natalia had become his girlfriend. She'd been his first kiss, his first love, the girl he lost his virginity to. They had a serious case of puppy love between them, and right after graduation, she became his first wife, too.

Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to last. Despite everything they'd been through .. which in all honesty wasn't much aside from a few school dances, make out sessions under the bleachers during football games, and some family dinners at holidays .. Natalia called it quits barely a year after they'd gotten married. She wanted out of this town and Mason wasn't willing to go with her, he wasn't willing to leave. So when Nat was accepted to Tulane, she went without him. And a few months later, Mason received divorce papers in the mail.

He never thought he'd be divorced at nineteen. Unfortunately, they'd been married too long for an annulment. Mason, who should have been heartbroken, was more angry than anything and the anger settled deep inside of him, building more towards resentment and hatred than anything else. The girl he'd fallen in love with became the shadow of a woman he couldn't stand. He was glad that she was gone and only a few months after she left, her mother and her grandparents (who had been his neighbors since birth) moved out of Wimberley, taking away any reason for her ever to return to the city that had once been her home. Or so he thinks, anyway.

After Natalia left, Mason decided he needed a change. He moved out of the apartment he'd shared with his now ex-wife, back into the house he grew up in. He told himself he was only going to live there for as long as it took for him to finish school. He was desperate to better himself and find his own place in the world. But when his father got sick and his mother could no longer afford the bills for the house on her own, he quit going to classes and got a full-time job to help them out. The last thing he expected was to be stuck in that position for the next six years of his life. Sadly, that's exactly what happened as his father took a turn for the worse later that year and just weeks after being diagnosed with cancer, he died. His life insurance had lapsed and there was no money coming in to help out with the expenses that death brings along with it.

Over the course of the next six years, the deed to the house was handed over to Mason. It was the only thing his father owned straight out and he'd left it to Mason in his will, provided that he continue to give his mother 'shelter from the storm.' Like he'd ever throw his mother out of the house?! Working full-time at Duffy's diner as a cook and doing odd jobs around town like his father used to do, he managed to keep up with all the bills at home. And for the most part, aside from having the constant feeling of failure, he was a fairly well-adjusted and happy young man. Of course, that was all just a matter of opinion.

quick facts.
¬ Mason is 6'4" in height and weighs close to 185 lbs. He has dark brown hair that is often ear length or longer. He also has dark brown eyes and two very deep set dimples, one in each cheek. Identifiable marks? He has a light brown birthmark behind his left knee, a scar from a biking accident on his right forearm, a scar of unknown origin underneath his chin, and a freckle on the top of his left big toe.

¬ He currently has no tattoos, though he considered getting one and dedicating it to his father. And he has no piercings or want to get any.

¬ He was named after both his father and his grandfather.

¬ Mason has been described as a straight-laced, country boy. He is very well-mannered and polite. He opens doors for people, pulls out chairs, and always says his pleases and thank yous. He's very hard-working and takes pride in the things he does. He'd do just about anything to help out a friend and almost as much for a stranger.

¬ A member of Wimberley High School's Graduating Class of 2002.

¬ One of his favorite hobbies is tinkering on old cars in the garage behind his house. He used to have car parts scattered around the house until his mother yelled at him and occasionally he still leaves a random bit of machinery lying here or there. He probably could have gotten a job at the local garage but was afraid that if he worked on cars full time, he'd lose his passion for it.

¬ His other favorite hobby is building things. He has an insane amount of tools in his garage and he's constantly building chairs, tables, bookshelves, and a various array of wooden pieces that he either keeps or sells to people around town. He tried setting up an eBay account to sell things once but people didn't really seem that interested.

¬ Mason is not very internet savvy. He knows his way around a computer to a point, but prefers not to spend much time on it. Same with phones. He only owns a cellphone so his mother can get in contact with him if she needs something. He's more old school than most of America nowadays and prefers face to face conversations and the wonderful world of snail mail.

¬ He has a strong distaste for peanut butter. Growing up, he used to eat peanut butter sandwiches all the time because it was affordable and easy to make. As he got older, he got so tired of peanut butter that he refuses to eat it at all now. He won't even eat peanut butter cups!

¬ Mason drives a rust red 1978 Chevrolet C10 Pickup truck. It was the very first vehicle he ever bought and he's been fixing it up bit by bit since he was seventeen, though mainly just to keep it running.

¬ Before his Dad got sick, Mason was enrolled at the University of Austin majoring in Engineering. He wanted to eventually switch to Architecture and become a contractor, but he never went back to get his B.A. after his father died.

¬ He and Natalia were married on Sunday, October 20th, 2002. It was a small wedding, nothing too flashy. But it was a day that Mason has always and will always remember.

¬ Has slept with two women in his lifetime. His ex-wife, Natalia, and the random woman he picked up at a bar the night he got his divorce papers.

¬ His favorite food is beef stew, but only the homemade variety. His mother has a recipe that's been passed down through the generations and Mason absolutely loves it. He's also quite partial to Kraft Mac'n'Cheese, canned peaches, and tomato sandwiches (just tomato, bread, and mayo).

¬ He loves Ovaltine, as childish as that might seem. Always has a canister in the cupboard at home and will only drink it in milk, not water.

¬ Mason is the type of guy who rarely swears. It's not that the words aren't in his vocabulary, it's just that he chooses not to use them on a daily basis (you can thank his Mom for the extra manners there). That being said, if you happen to hear him let a few choice words go? It's recommended that you run the other way because he only uses them when he's really, really not happy.

¬ When he's upset (angry or sad), he usually likes to disappear for awhile. Normally, he ends up at the cemetery, sitting near his father's grave having a conversation with the old man. He was always really close to his father so he finds this rather cathartic and calming. Nobody really knows that he does this because nobody has ever found him there and Mason isn't the type to disclose personal details like that.

storylines.

THE ONE HE WANTS TO SAVE. [info]saam
It seems that Mason has this uncanny ability of being in the right place at exactly the right time .. or, at least when it comes to helping out Sam. They'd known of one another for a long time but it wasn't until Mason stepped in to help her out at a bar that they really met one another. And they've been friends ever since.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY. [info]naramir
Some might say that Natalia broke Mason's heart when she left, but that's not how he'd tell it. He'd say it was a mutual decision. Or that he'd told her to go, follow her dreams. But in reality? He'd been hurt. And he'll be even more so when he finds out the secret she's been keeping ... Mason has a son.

THE ONE HE'S RELATED TO. [info]ljpruett

THE ONE HE'S GETTING TO KNOW. [info]pilarmari
Pilar seems like a sweet girl and she does her very best to help Sam out whenever she can, which is definitely a redeeming quality in Mason's eyes. If it wasn't for Sam, they probably wouldn't have started talking but Mason has genuine respect for Pilar and could definitely see himself becoming her friend.
